The Spring Manufacturers Institute will offer a new spring design training webinar Stress Relieving and Heat Treatment of Springs on Thursday, March 19, 2026, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm EDT using Microsoft Teams.

Our web-based training programs have been quite popular. High marks have been received from students who attended.

The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic explanations on why, how and when springs should be exposed to a given treatment so their performance can be assured and eventually optimized. The course combines instruction on basic metallurgical principles and spring heat treatment fundamentals.

This course is intended for students with some knowledge in the design and manufacture of springs.

Students will learn:

  • Definitions and terminology
  • Metallurgical & Mechanical Concepts
  • Why Springs are stress relieved or heat treated
  • Residual stress
  • Heat Treatments of Steel
  • Low Temperature Heat Treatment used for spring manufacturing
  • How springs are heat treated
  • Recommended LTHT parameters and considerations for common spring materials
  • Potential problems during heat treatment and stress relieving
  • Special topics

Students will have the opportunity to seek opinions and clarification of any stress relief heat treating related issues which they may have.

This class will benefit students by increasing their stress relief heat treating knowledge and their company by having an SMI-trained associate as part of their team.

The training course instructor is Simon Fleury, Technical Advisor at SMI.
