Description

The Spring Manufacturers Institute will offer a new spring design training webinar Strength of Materials and Spring Material Manufacturing on Thursday, November 12, 2026, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm EST using Microsoft Teams. Our web-based training programs have been quite popular. High marks have been received from students who attended. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a basic understanding of materials and the factors contributing to strength and ductility. The focus is on carbon, carbon alloy, and stainless steel manufacturing technologies which include integrated steelmaking, mini mill electric arc steelmaking, and AOD steelmaking for stainless steel. The course combines instruction on basic metallurgical principles and spring material manufacturing practices. Students will learn: • The Materials Design Philosophy • Definitions and Terminology • Metallurgical Concepts • Common Production Processes • Common Material Imperfections • Special topics Students will have the opportunity to seek opinions and clarification of steel and stainless-steel related process and product issues which they may have. This class will benefit students by increasing their knowledge of what contributes to strength and ductility of spring making materials and their company by having an SMI-trained associate as part of their team. The training course instructor is Rick Gordon, Technical Director at SMI.
